Radio Merit Badge Lesson Plans

When BSA Camp Rainey Mountain decided to start a new Tech Studies merit badge department, I was asked to put together a lesson plan for the Radio Merit Badge.

I found a number of resources on the Internet, including one day presentations from K2GW and AA6J. Unfortunately, nothing quite fit the bill, so I pulled together a program from many sources. Credit goes to K2GW for a good portion of this material.

I was asked to prepare a Radio Merit Badge program to be taught at the Camp Rainey Mountain Boy Scout Camp in Clayton, GA. One of the activities that we thought would be fun for the Scouts during the Friday class period, was a Fox Hunt. This would give the Scouts a chance for some hands on radio work, in a real life search and recovery operation.

Tape Measure 2m Yagi for RDF

When pulling together equipment for fox hunting, a good directional antenna was required. Eddie (W4JEM) uses a 2m 3 element yagi made from sections of a flexible steel tape measure. I had an opportunity to use his antenna, and thought it would be perfect for Boy Scout activities - durable and easily repaired.
