This section of the website includes pictures and documents concerning the Roberts family beginning with Edward ROBERTS who may have been born in England c 1775, then migrated to America with his foster parents who were named WHITAM (per family story; other resources state he was born in Maryland.) Edward married Rosy STEWART (born c1778 in Virginia) on 27 Feb 1800 in Clarke Co., Kentucky. Their 9 children were born in Kentucky: Elizabeth, Sarah, John, Zachariah, Mariah, Maranda, Mary Ann, Charles Edward, and Elijah W. The Roberts family, like many others who had received land grants in Kentucky for military service, lost their land when Kentucky became a state. The federal government then gave these families land in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, or Missouri; our Roberts family moved to Indiana. They are first found in Shelby Twp, Ripley County, Indiana in 1826.

Jonathan BENJAMIN was born 14 Oct 1739 in New York or New Jersey. He married Margaret BROWN in 1760, probably in Orange Co., NY. They settled in Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania before 1773, then to Licking Co., Ohio, about 1802. Jonathan served in the Revolutionary War. Their children include: Benoni b. 1771, Lilly b. 1774, __ dau who marr Frederick FORD, Mary b. 1777, Jemima b. 1783, and Jane who marr. Isaac INGMAN 1810. Members of the BENJAMIN, FORD, and BROWN families intermarried frequently, thus genealogical information will be found concerning all three families in this section of the website.

He married Mary Theresa KNIPSHIELD August 15, 1836 in Pittsburgh. (She was b. 06 June 1810 in Endingen.) The family and their descendants lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and St. Louis, Missouri.

One daughter, Ann, was born in Grincasek, Kovnau, Russia in 1886/1887; a second daughter, Estelle, was born on board ship on the way to America in 1888/1889. Daughter Bess Dorothy and son Herman were born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and their fifth child, Mary, was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1895.
